What is a Pip and Why Does Pip Value Vary?

In forex trading, a Pip stands for "Percentage in Point" or "Price Interest Point". It is the standardized unit of measurement used to track the price movement between two currencies:

  • For 4-decimal currency pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD): 1 Pip = 0.0001 (the 4th decimal place).
  • For Japanese Yen pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY): 1 Pip = 0.01 (the 2nd decimal place).
  • For Spot Gold (XAU/USD): 1 Pip = $0.01 ($0.10 or $1.00 move is often measured as 10 to 100 pips).

Use our Pip Size & Value Calculator to instantly calculate your dollar risk and pip value across any lot size.

Pip Value Formula Across All Lot Sizes

Pip Value Formula (Quote Currency is Account Currency):
Pip Value = Traded Units × Pip Size (0.0001 or 0.01)

Lot Sizes & Units Traded:
- Standard Lot (1.00) = 100,000 Units ➔ $10.00 per Pip (on EUR/USD)
- Mini Lot (0.10) = 10,000 Units ➔ $1.00 per Pip
- Micro Lot (0.01) = 1,000 Units ➔ $0.10 per Pip
- Nano Lot (0.001)= 100 Units ➔ $0.01 per Pip

Example 1: EUR/USD Standard Lot Trade

  • Units Traded: 100,000 (1 Standard Lot)
  • Pip Movement: +35 pips
  • Single Pip Value: 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10.00
  • Total Net Profit: 35 pips × $10.00 = $350.00

Example 2: USD/JPY (Yen Pair Calculation)

  • Current USD/JPY Exchange Rate: 154.50
  • Units Traded: 100,000 (1 Standard Lot)
  • Single Pip Value in JPY: 100,000 × 0.01 = 1,000 JPY
  • Convert to USD: 1,000 JPY / 154.50 = $6.47 per Pip
  • Total Net Profit for 50 Pips: 50 × $6.47 = $323.50

3 Essential Risk Management Rules for Forex Traders

  1. Calculate Lot Size from Dollar Risk, Not Guesswork: Determine your stop-loss distance in pips first. If your risk limit is $100 and your stop-loss is 20 pips, your pip value must be $100 / 20 = $5.00/pip (0.50 Mini Lots).
  2. Model the trade costs: Pair your pip calculations with our Trading Profit/Loss Calculator to estimate P&L and break-even after the entered commission. This tool does not determine whether a strategy is profitable.
  3. Use the Forex Position Size Calculator: For leverage and margin requirements, check our full Forex Pip & Position Size Calculator.
