Pro Tips & Best Practices

  • Enter exact numbers — the calculator handles rounding at the end for accuracy.
  • Check the displayed units, dates, and assumptions; currency selection may format values without converting them.
  • Treat estimates as planning aids and verify tax, fee, health, and lending inputs with authoritative sources.

Pip Value Formula for a Known Lot Size

This runs the position-sizing calculation in the opposite direction: you already know the lot size and want the cash value of one pip. Multiply pip size by the number of base units to get the pip value in the quote currency, then convert once into your account currency. For pairs quoted in your account currency the conversion is 1 and the second step disappears, which is why EUR/USD pip values look deceptively simple from a USD account.

PipValue(quote) = PipSize × Units
PipValue(account) = PipValue(quote) / (Quote per Account)
where Units = Lots × ContractSize, PipSize = 0.0001 (0.01 for JPY quotes)

Worked Step-by-Step Example

Practical Scenario

Finding the per-pip cost of a fixed 1.0-lot USD/JPY position held in a USD account.

Inputs
Pair USD/JPY at 149.90 · Lot size 1.00 (100,000 USD) · Account USD
Expected Output
$6.67 per pip — so a 30-pip adverse move on this position costs $200.10
Calculation Steps
PipValue(JPY) = 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 JPY
Quote per account = 149.90 JPY per USD
PipValue(USD) = 1,000 / 149.90 = $6.67 per pip

Why this matters

Money and health decisions get made on rough mental maths far too often. Running the actual numbers takes thirty seconds and routinely changes the answer — whether that's a loan you shouldn't sign, a rate you should be charging, or a target you can realistically hit.

Popular Use Cases

  • Case 1
Model a loan, mortgage or credit-card payoff before signing anything.
  • Case 2
Track fitness targets — BMI, BMR, water intake, calories and body fat.
  • Case 3
Split bills, tips and shared expenses without the drama.
  • Case 4
Convert grades, GPAs and academic scores between systems.

Technical Limitations & Boundary Conditions

  • Pip value in the account currency drifts as the exchange rate moves, so a figure calculated at entry is only approximate by the time you exit.
  • Some brokers quote fractional pips (pipettes) at one extra decimal place. Those are tenths of the pip used here.
  • Excludes spread, commission and swap, which are separate costs from the pip movement itself.

Key Terms Explained

Principal
The original amount borrowed or invested, before any interest is applied.
APR
Annual Percentage Rate — the yearly cost of a loan including fees, which is what makes it comparable between lenders.
Compounding
Earning interest on previously earned interest. Frequency (monthly vs annually) meaningfully changes the total.
Amortisation
The schedule showing how each payment splits between interest and principal over the life of a loan.
