Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mixing monthly and annual rates

A 12% annual rate is 1% monthly, not 12% monthly. This single slip inflates results by an order of magnitude.

Ignoring fees, taxes and insurance

The headline number is rarely the number you pay. Add the extras before you compare two offers.

Rounding too early

Round only the final figure. Rounding intermediate steps compounds error across long schedules.

Technical Limitations & Boundary Conditions

  • Ignores taxes, dividends, borrowing costs on short positions and overnight financing, all of which are jurisdiction- and broker-specific.
  • Assumes entry and exit fill at the prices entered. Partial fills and slippage change the realised average price.
  • Commission is modelled as a flat percentage per leg. Brokers with per-share, per-contract or minimum-ticket pricing need those converted to an equivalent percentage first.
  • Results describe a single trade in isolation and say nothing about the expected value of repeating it. This is arithmetic, not advice.

Pro Tips & Best Practices

  • Enter exact numbers — the calculator handles rounding at the end for accuracy.
  • Check the displayed units, dates, and assumptions; currency selection may format values without converting them.
  • Treat estimates as planning aids and verify tax, fee, health, and lending inputs with authoritative sources.

Profit, Loss, Return and Break-Even Formulas

This is instrument-agnostic entry-and-exit arithmetic for shares, crypto or any asset quoted in a single currency — no pips, lots or leverage involved. Commission is a percentage charged on each leg, so it is calculated twice, against the entry notional and again against the exit notional. That is why the break-even price is never the entry price: it is offset by the round-trip fee spread across your quantity, and on small positions that offset can be wider than the move being traded.

Gross P&L = (Exit − Entry) × Quantity (long)
Gross P&L = (Entry − Exit) × Quantity (short)
Round-trip commission = (Entry × Qty × C%) / 100 + (Exit × Qty × C%) / 100
Net P&L = Gross P&L − Round-trip commission
Return % = Net P&L / (Entry × Quantity) × 100
Break-even price = Entry ± (Round-trip commission / Quantity) (+ long, − short)

Worked Step-by-Step Example

Practical Scenario

Reviewing a completed long stock trade with percentage commission on both legs.

Inputs
Long · Entry $42.50 · Exit $46.10 · Quantity 250 · Commission 0.1% per side
Expected Output
+$877.85 net · 8.26% return · break-even at $42.5886
Calculation Steps
Gross P&L = ($46.10 − $42.50) × 250 = $900.00
Entry leg fee = ($42.50 × 250 × 0.1) / 100 = $10.63
Exit leg fee = ($46.10 × 250 × 0.1) / 100 = $11.53
Round-trip commission = $22.15 (2.46% of the gross move)
Net P&L = $900.00 − $22.15 = $877.85
Cost basis = $42.50 × 250 = $10,625.00
Return = $877.85 / $10,625.00 × 100 = 8.26%
Break-even = $42.50 + ($22.15 / 250) = $42.5886
