Why Every Trader Needs a P&L Calculator
Whether you are trading stocks on the NYSE, pairs on the forex market, or altcoins on Binance, calculating your exact profit or loss before placing a trade — and after closing it — is the foundation of disciplined trading. Emotional traders who estimate their P&L in their heads consistently underestimate commission costs and overestimate returns.
ProfitTool's Trading P&L Calculator gives you exact figures in seconds for any long or short position.
The Trading Profit/Loss Formula
Long Trade P&L = (Exit Price - Entry Price) × Position Size
Short Trade P&L = (Entry Price - Exit Price) × Position Size
Net P&L = Gross P&L - Total Commission Fees
ROI (%) = (Net P&L / (Entry Price × Position Size)) × 100Example: Long Stock Trade
Entry Price: $100.00
Exit Price: $115.00
Position Size: 100 shares
Commission: 0.1% per leg
Gross P&L: ($115 - $100) × 100 = $1,500.00
Commission (in): $100 × 100 × 0.001 = $10.00
Commission (out):$115 × 100 × 0.001 = $11.50
Total Commission:$21.50
Net P&L: $1,500 - $21.50 = $1,478.50
ROI: $1,478.50 / $10,000 = 14.79%How to Calculate Break-Even Price
Your break-even price is the price at which your net P&L is exactly zero after accounting for commission costs:
Long Break-Even = Entry Price + (Total Commission / Position Size)
Short Break-Even = Entry Price - (Total Commission / Position Size)Knowing your break-even prevents "almost profitable" trades from draining your account through commission friction.
Understanding Risk:Reward Ratio
The Risk:Reward (R:R) ratio is arguably the most important metric in professional trading. It compares the potential profit of a trade to its potential loss:
Risk:Reward = |Exit Price - Entry Price| / |Entry Price - Stop Loss|
Example:
Entry: $100
Target: $115 → Potential reward: $15
Stop Loss: $95 → Potential risk: $5
R:R Ratio: $15 / $5 = 1:3A 1:3 R:R ratio means the potential target is three times the amount risked to the stop, before costs and execution effects. A ratio alone is not a profitability rule: expected results also depend on win rate, spreads, commissions, slippage, and whether the plan is followed.
R:R Minimum Win Rate Table
R:R Ratio Minimum Win Rate to Break Even
1 : 1 50%
1 : 1.5 40%
1 : 2 34%
1 : 3 25%
1 : 4 20%Position Sizing: How Much Should You Risk Per Trade?
Professional traders risk only 1–2% of their total account equity on any single trade. Here is the formula:
Position Size = (Account Equity × Risk %) / (Entry Price - Stop Loss)
Example:
Account: $10,000, Risk 1% = $100 risk budget
Entry: $100, Stop: $95 (risk per share = $5)
Position Size = $100 / $5 = 20 shares maxLong vs. Short: Key Differences in P&L Calculation
- Long position: You buy first, sell later. Profitable when price rises.
- Short position: You borrow and sell first, buy back later at (hopefully) lower price. Profitable when price falls.
Short selling carries unlimited theoretical risk since a stock can rise infinitely, whereas a long position can only lose 100% (to zero). This is why position sizing and stop losses are even more critical for short trades.
