Understanding Tax Inclusive vs. Tax Exclusive Pricing

For digital service providers, freelancers, and online stores selling internationally, mastering VAT (Value Added Tax) calculations is essential for accurate quoting and compliant invoicing.

The Standard Formulas

Tax Exclusive (Adding VAT to a Net Price):
Gross = Net * (1 + Tax Rate)

Tax Inclusive (Extracting VAT from a Gross Price):
Net = Gross / (1 + Tax Rate)
VAT Amount = Gross - Net

Global VAT Reference Rates

  • United Kingdom (HMRC): 20% standard, 5% reduced.
  • European Union: Ranges from 17% (Luxembourg) to 27% (Hungary); Germany 19%, France 20%.
  • Canada: 5% GST + Provincial PST/HST (up to 15%).
  • Australia: 10% GST.

Use our Percentage Calculator and Invoice Generator to calculate exact tax breakdowns and generate print-ready itemized bills.
